When is the right time to consider hospice care?

Many people believe hospice is only for the final days of life, but it is often most beneficial when started earlier. Hospice can provide months of improved comfort, better symptom control, and meaningful support for both patients and families.

It may be time to consider hospice when you notice increasing symptoms despite treatment, frequent hospital visits, or a steady decline in daily functioning. Hospice is also appropriate when curative treatments are no longer effective, no longer desired, or when the focus naturally shifts toward comfort and quality of life. A general guideline is a prognosis of six months or less, although many patients receive hospice care longer.
