When to Consider a Hospice Referral
A hospice referral may be appropriate when a patient meets one or more of the following criteria:
- Terminal prognosis of six months or less if the disease follows its expected course
- Frequent hospitalizations or ED visits in the past 6 months
- Progressive functional decline despite optimal treatment
- Patient or family expresses desire to focus on comfort over curative treatment
- Significant uncontrolled symptoms: pain, dyspnea, nausea, or anxiety
- Progressive unintentional weight loss, recurrent infections, or PPS ≤50%
