Hospice Care Across Ventura County

Ventura County is served by several acute-care systems whose discharge teams introduce most families to hospice. Dignity Health's St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and the county-operated Ventura County Medical Center handle high volume in the western county, while Los Robles Regional Medical Center is the largest hospital and the primary discharge source for the Conejo Valley in the east. Adventist Health Simi Valley serves as the community hospital for the Simi Valley and Moorpark corridor. MAR Hospice Care works with these teams to bring comfort-focused care directly home, so patients re-enter familiar surroundings with nursing, medications, and equipment already in place.

Geography divides Ventura County into natural service regions, which shapes how quickly an in-home hospice team can reach each community. The Santa Susana Mountains separate Simi Valley from the rest of the county, and Simi is actually faster to reach from MAR's Tarzana base, about 23 miles via the SR-118, than from Ventura on the coast. The Conejo Grade on US-101 separates the inland Conejo Valley around Thousand Oaks from the flat coastal Oxnard Plain. Thousand Oaks sits at the county's eastern edge, most accessible from Los Angeles County, while Oxnard, on the coast, is the most distant of MAR's three Ventura targets. Knowing these divisions lets our team schedule dependable visits across very different terrain.

About 835,000 people live in Ventura County, with close to 17 percent aged 65 or older, roughly the national average, though the senior share varies sharply by city. Thousand Oaks skews notably older, while Oxnard skews younger, which means hospice need looks different from one community to the next. The county also has an above-average veteran population, many of them Vietnam-era, and coordinating hospice for those who served is an honor our team takes seriously. With a substantial Hispanic community, bilingual Spanish and English communication is important across the county and especially in the western cities, where it can make all the difference for a family making decisions together.
